Charleston claims big boat championship

As the big boat championship of college sailing, the 2024 Kennedy Cup was held November 2-3 in Annapolis, MD. Ten teams from across the United States raced Navy 44s in shifty winds and a strong ebb tide on Chesapeake Bay. In the 8-race series, the College of Charleston won by one point over Navy, with Coast Guard eight points off the lead in third place.

The first day had sunny skies, temperatures in the high 50s, and a 12-14 knot northwest breeze as the College of Charleston ended the first day ahead of the Midshipmen after five races. The final three races on day two featured cool temperatures, sunny skies, and a northeasterly breeze of 10 knots.

The winning Cougars team had John Polek ’26, Bo Dwyer ’26, Phoenix Bliss ’28, John McCarthy ’25, Gweneth Nechas ’28, Luke Tougas ’27, Robert Silcox ’25, and Jonathan Weed ’26.
