Defending the America’s Cup offshore

Published on May 31st, 2024

In sport, securing a home final is usually considered an advantage, but Team New Zealand thinks its decision to take the defense of the America’s Cup offshore will give it an edge.

“There’s no question that when you are away from home, and you go up there for a shorter period, three months, four months, like we did for Bermuda for example, like we did in San Francisco, it’s definitely got an edge to it,” said Kevin Shoebridge, the chief operating officer.

Shoebridge would know. He’s a veteran of 10 Cups, including Team New Zealand’s four Cup victories, going back to the country’s very first challenge in Fremantle in 1986.

“Personally, I prefer it (being away). I just think it just feels a lot more focused, and I’m not saying we’re not focused when we’re at home, but it’s much easier to be focused.” – Full report
