With the ultra-high level of competition in J/70 one design racing, the class association has been busy building bridges. While the main trophies typically require a significant budget for new equipment and professional crew, there are now sub-divisions to spread out the ribbons.
• Corinthian Division: For people that qualify for World Sailing Group 1 categorization. This is where the amateurs can shine.
• One-Pro Division: For people that want to include one pro amid their amateur crew.
• Young Crew Division: Nobody over 25 years of age, with no professional status limits.
• Mixed-Plus Division: The crew shall consist of 4 or more persons and contain no more than two (2) males over 18 years of age.
Mixed-Plus was introduced to get more women on the boats, but then the class rule was written to also encourage families and young people to participate. There are plenty of possible team combinations, among them an option that includes no women. Hmm…
The US Class has held national titles for Open, Corinthian, and Youth, and in 2025 will be holding the J/70 Mixed-Plus US National Championship on June 13-15 in Seattle, WA. The entry list is currently at 11 teams, and while not looking too “national” at the moment, includes the local heavy hitters: Bergan, Goldfarb, Laffitte, Loe, McKee, Rosenberg, and Whittemore.
