Eight Bells: Jean-Marie Finot

Published on April 7th, 2025

Jean-Marie Finot, eminent French naval architect, passed away on April 2, 2025 at the age of 83. His death represents a significant loss for the world of naval architecture and sailing.

A certified architect by profession, Jean-Marie began his career in naval architecture in 1968 while working at the Glénan sailing school. He founded the Finot Group in 1970 and joined forces with Pascal Conq in 1985.

An innovator throughout his immense career, his mathematical and scientific, yet philosophical and poetic approach to sailing, has enabled him to achieve numerous successes.

From the Ecume de Mer to the Vendée Globe, including the Admiral’s Cup, the Mini-Transat, the Route du Rhum, and so many others, his boats’ racing victories are countless.

But Jean-Marie was at least as proud of having designed landmark cruising boats, some of which were sold in thousands, undeniable proof of the success of his great leitmotif: harmony with the sea.

A significant figure for all those who knew him, Jean-Marie revolutionized naval architecture with his boats that were fast, safe, easy to steer and operate, comfortable, and elegant.
