Rockstars and Legends 2024

Published on November 13th, 2024

What happens when you put a young racing rockstar and a lifelong cruising legend on stage together—and then throw a bunch of questions at them? That was the idea that kicked off SAIL’s first Rockstars and Legends event, with Cole Brauer and Lin Pardey meeting in person for the first time and delighting an audience of sailors with their insights, stories, experiences, advice, and humor.

The event, sponsored by Hanse Yachts held during the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October, explored common threads in their unique careers that encompass diverse aspects of the sailing world, offset by 50 years. Joining them on stage was SAIL’s Editor-in-Chief Wendy Mitman Clarke and Managing Editor Lydia Mullan.

Cole Brauer is the first American woman to race a sailboat solo and nonstop around the globe, competing as the youngest person and only female sailor in the 2023-24 Global Solo Challenge, finishing second. Along the way, she amassed half a million followers on Instagram, introducing hundreds of thousands of people to the world of ocean racing.

Lin Pardey literally wrote the book—many books—on cruising, inspiring generations of sailors to embrace the ethos of go small, go simple, go now. Over 50 years, she and her late husband, Larry, built two boats—both engine free and under 30 feet—and sailed more than 200,000 miles, including two circumnavigations and doubling Cape Horn.

To give more sailors the opportunity to hear the unique discussion between these two remarkable sailors, SAIL has made the full video available below:
