Ensuring club longevity and vibrancy

Published on October 21st, 2024

Dear Curmudgeon: How can yacht clubs effectively bridge the gap between their older, established members and the younger, skilled sailors in order to ensure the longevity and vibrancy of the club? – Bridge builder

Dear Bridge: The first step is to have younger members, and that can effectively come from a junior sailing program that introduces them to popular member activity and shares how sailing is a lifestyle. Clubs should also have relationships with local universities, as their graduates that sail may seek local employment and membership. An affordable dues structure for sub-30-year-olds gets them in the door, but the discounted fees need to include a volunteer requirement. While there should be events specific to this age group, volunteerism introduces them to older members and club events, which is that necessary bridge, and then club leadership needs to know when to pass on the baton. – The Curmudgeon
