Out with bombers, In with Blokarts

The first-ever New England Blokart Championship transformed the decommissioned Loring Air Force Base into an ideal venue for land sailing in Limestone, Maine. Thirty-two competitors from California to Canada converged October 10-12 with their easily transportable Blokarts to give life to the 9,000-acre facility which closed in 1994 after over 40 years of service.
The vast airfield provided the perfect course for high-speed land racing. With runways stretching two miles long and 300 feet wide, the vast space allowed organizers to set up a variety of challenging courses, from figure eights to long windward/leeward legs, with 11 races completed for two divisions: GOLD (for experienced sailors) and SILVER.
Despite the strong winds, which gusted over 50 mph at times, PROs Deb Whitehorse and Nina Fleming – both seasoned iceboat race officials – brought their experience from running races all over the world, including the 2024 Blokart World Championships at Ivanpah, Nevada.
The local community hosted an Oktoberfest next to the track where spectators could watch the racing action up close. The racers enjoyed the famous Maine hospitality, with group dinners, cocktails in the hangar, and a chance to explore the expansive airfield on long-distance rides.
The New England Blokart Championship was an outstanding success, bringing together sailors from across the U.S. and Canada to compete, socialize, and celebrate the sport. With the unique history of Loring as a backdrop and the fall colors of Maine in full display, it’s clear this event is here to stay.
