It’s not a perfect system, but when sailing introduced a women’s event at the 1988 Olympics, it sought to level the gender inequities for competition. With strength as a variable, women’s events narrowed the range, but depending on the event, a stronger person still had an advantage.
That’s made the participation of transgender athletes in the women’s category in sports a long ongoing debate worldwide, affecting every level — from the grassroots to the elite — with global leaders weighing in on the issue from the UN to the G7.
