America’s Cup buoys are high-tech too

Published on September 3rd, 2024

You will know them if you watch America’s Cup racing. Those square yellow marker buoys at each end of the start line, and at the top gate where the boats turn to start a new leg. Buoys are a permanent part of yacht racing. But these Barcelona buoys are not as you know them.

The yellow Barcelona buoys have a life (almost) of their own. In the past a buoy floated on the surface and was anchored in place. In the Auckland 2021 Cup that meant a lot of anchor chain, 20 metres.

Moving buoys when the course had to change at short notice was a mission for a fleet of boats to haul-up anchors, move buoys and re-set them.

“Out here, we’re dealing with 90 metres of water,” said Chris Salthouse the head of Team New Zealand’s on-water operations – which took on the task of developing an “autonomous” buoy. – Full report
