Pope Francis calls for Olympic truce
Published on July 21st, 2024
When Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, they broke the Olympic Truce for Beijing 2022 which began seven days before the start of the Olympic Games, and ended seven days after the closing of the Paralympic Games.
The Olympic Truce is a tradition originating from ancient Greece that dates back to 776 BC, and is intended to secure safe passage for athletes during the Games and, in the long term, promote the idea of working toward world peace.
The action prompted the International Olympic Committee and global sports organizations to take actions against Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials, which has led to athletes of these countries now unable to participate in the Paris 2024 Games under their national flag.
The IOC has again initiated the Olympic Truce, which extends from July19 to September 15, 2024. Pope Francis, during his Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square on July 21, voiced hope that this event can be “a sign of the inclusive world we want to build and that the athletes, with their sporting testimony, may be messengers of peace and valuable models for the young.” – Full report
