Cyclors are taking over the world

Published on June 19th, 2024

Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, and the nation’s second largest city, is on a roll… literally. While beach-goers will be looking toward the sea this summer at the 37th America’s Cup, there is more to come after the last race.

The Tour de France will start in Barcelona for the first time in 2026. Considered the most prestigious men’s multiple-stage bicycle race, the opening two stages will be in Catalonia, with the third stage starting in the Spanish region before crossing into France.

“This is a historic milestone. It confirms Barcelona’s role as an international sports capital,” said the city’s mayor Jaume Collboni. “Barcelona will be the only city in the world to host the Olympics, World Cup, America’s Cup, and Tour de France – the four most influential sporting events in the world.”

Barcelona hosted the 1982 FIFA World Cup and 1992 Olympic Games, and this will the third occasion Spain has hosted the race’s Grand Depart, having previously done so in San Sebastian in 1992 and in Bilbao last year.

A coincidence that half the crew on each America’s Cup boat are cyclors? We think not!

Following the publication of the AC37 Protocol and AC75 Class Rule on November 17, 2021, the AC75 Class Rule and AC Technical Regulations were finalized on March 17, 2022. The entry period was from December 1, 2021 until July 31, 2022, but late entries for the 37th America’s Cup could be accepted until May 31, 2023. The Defender was to announce the Match Venue on September 17, 2021 but postponed the reveal, finally confirming Barcelona on March 30, 2022. The 37th America’s Cup begins October 12, 2024.
