Settlement: US Sailing vs. America One Racing
Published on May 22nd, 2024
Bristol, RI (May 22, 2024) – US Sailing, the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing, announced today that it has come to a final resolution of terms settling all legal and other matters between US Sailing and America One Racing.
The national authority had filed the lawsuit on January 16, 2024 against America One Racing (AIR), which had been the largest private financial supporter of US sailing athletes. Also included in the filing was the former U.S. Olympic Sailing Program Executive Director Paul Cayard and Performance Director Leandro Spina along with Bill Ruh, past chairman of the United States Sailing Foundation.
“America One Racing is pleased that US Sailing has dropped its lawsuit,” said the AIR statement. “No money changed hands as part of the settlement. The parties agreed to release any and all claims, while also putting in place a mutual non-disparagement agreement. A1R will continue its long-standing commitment to developing athletes to compete and consistently achieve podium finishes at the highest levels of sailing. We wish all our USA sailors the best of luck for the upcoming Paris Olympics!”
The lawsuit by US Sailing was widely criticized with appeals to reconsider. Dean Brenner, past Chairman and Team Leader, found the action to be “ridiculous” while 2-time Olympic medalist JJ Fetter asked for the CEO and Board to resign. Gold medalist Anna Tobias, who was campaigning for Paris 2024, found the lawsuit to be “a frivolous and embarrassing side show for US Sailing and its athletes traveling around the world” and “a distraction from the goals.”
Thirteen sailors have been selected to represent the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Marseille, France.
