America’s Cup: Training plan for U.S. Youth and Women
Published on August 30th, 2022
As a means to reduce costs for the 37th America’s Cup, teams are only permitted to build one new AC75. At the same time the event has introduced the multi-purpose One Design AC40 class which teams will be able to convert and use for testing, component development, and Match Race training.
But when converted back to the measured One Design AC40 class, these boats will be the platform for the new America’s Cup Women’s Regatta and America’s Cup Youth events which will provide a pathways into the America’s Cup for the growing global talent pool of female and youth sailors.
Designed by the America’s Cup defender, the AC40s won’t hit the water until later this year, so challenger American Magic will be using the 23-foot foiling monohull Persico 69F to train its youth and women’s program. A series of racing events are planned from September 2022 through February 2023.
Peter McClennen, American Magic Women and Youth manager, emphasized the need of having more US sailors to start foiling, and explain that the Persico 69F was chosen because it is the most adequate and advanced team foiling vessel for training the next AC40 challengers.
While the Persico 69Fs are sailed by three, the AC40 will have four crew which for the Youth America’s Cup can be made up of male, female, or mixed crews all of whom are required to be aged 25 and under. There will be no age restriction for the Women’s America’s Cup regatta.

The entry period opened December 1, 2021 and runs until July 31, 2022, but late entries for the 37th America’s Cup may be accepted until May 31, 2023.
