French, USA lead 49er & 49erFX Champs

Cascais, Portugal (May 4, 2021) – On the first day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49erFX Championship, the Olympic fleet composed of 28 boats in the 49erFx class, plus 10 boats in the 49er class, fulfilled the day’s schedule of holding the three scheduled races for each class.
The Women’s fleet started the day with the classic conditions of that local wind in the northwest quadrant with 15 knots of intensity. The French team of Lili Sebesi and Yann Jauvin closed the opening day at podium top while two points behind are world champions Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló (ESP) with 2016 Olympic champions Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) in third.
Georgia and Antonia Lewin-LaFrance (CAN) are top North American in 19th place.
In the 49er Men’s Olympic class, with the wind now rising to the 20 knots, the American duo of Ian Barrows and Hans Henken leads the championship after two bullets in the last two races of the day. In second place are Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson (USA) with Robert Solune and Sipan Valentin (FRA) in third.
There are four continents – America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania – and a total of 19 nationalities represented in this important training event prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Racing is planned for May 4-9.
