America’s Cup: Paving road to the Match

When the Protocol for the 36th America’s Cup was released on September 2017, it stated how the precedent of preliminary America’s Cup World Series regattas would lead toward the America’s Cup Match in March 2021.

But the plan for possibly one or two events in 2019 was soon scrapped, and it was in July 2019 that we learned the first view of the AC75 Class foiling monohulls in competition would be April 2020 in Cagliari, Sardinia.

The lingering question was whether the plan for three events in 2020 would continue, and with a deadline of November 30, 2019 for that question to be answered, it has been confirmed that the venues and dates for the remaining two ACWS regattas have been finalized by the Defender and the Challenger of Record.

With the venues anticipated to be Portsmouth on England’s south coast and the Match venue of Auckland in New Zealand, plans are not far enough along for this to be confirmed, with full details to be publicly released over the coming weeks in coordination with the associated Host Cities and commercial partners.

In addition to Challenges from Italy, USA, and Great Britain that were accepted during the initial entry period (January 1 to June 30, 2018), eight additional Notices of Challenge were received by the late entry deadline on November 30, 2018. Of those eight submittals, entries from Malta, USA, and the Netherlands were also accepted. Here’s the list:

Of the three late entries, only Stars+Stripes USA remains committed, but they still must complete the entry fee payment process before they will be eligible to race. They have already paid their initial payment but as a late entry challenger under the Protocol they also have a liability to pay a US$1million late entry fee due in installments by October 1, 2019. This deadline coincided with the venue schedule which has the construction of their team base beginning in late 2019, which we assume was done in the event the team is unable to fulfill their payment deadline. However, it is not yet confirmed if they have paid the fee.
