Chilean invasion at Lightning Worlds
Published on June 14th, 2019
Espoo, Finland (June 14, 2019) – The first day of the 2019 Lightning World Championship was a Chilean invasion of Finland as two Chilean teams each took race wins in the first two races of the series.
Tito Gonzales with daughter Trini and Alfred Sherman won the first race of the day. However, it was Felipe Robles, Paula Herman, and Andres Guevara who won race two and now lead after the first day of racing.
Race one saw 7-9 knots of breeze and moderate chop arise after hours of postponement. Team Gonzales, who would go on to win the race, started ahead at the pin end and never looked back.
Breeze built into race two where Team Robles also started down the line. They worked up the left side of the course to lead around the windward mark and would only extend this lead as Team Jody Starck chased them around the course.
As the final scores were tallied, Team Robles took a strong regatta lead by scoring a 2,1, which was most closely followed by newly crowned European champions, Team Conte of Argentina. The regatta is all to play for, however, as six more races over three days of racing await a highly competitive fleet.
Racing is planned from June 14 to 17.
