Additional Medal Event at Pan Am

(January 16, 2019) – The Pan Am Sailing Federation (PASAF) announced that Pan Am Sports with the Organizing Committee of the Lima 2019 XVIII Pan American Games (COPAL) have increased the Athlete Quota for the Sport of Sailing for Lima 2019 by 20 athletes, from 148 to 168, in order to permit an increase the number of boats in the Mixed 2-person Multi-hull – Nacra 17 – from 8 to 10, and to add an 11th medal event for the Men’s 2-person Skiff – 49er – with 8 boats.
The Country Qualification regatta for the 2019 Pan Am Games for both the 49er and the Nacra 17 will be the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series – Miami, to be held January 27-Febuary 3, 2019 in Miami, FL, USA.
PASAF also announced that World Sailing will utilize the 2019 Pan Am Games as the Regional Games Qualifier for Tokyo 2020 in these two events:
Men’s Singlehanded – Laser
Women’s Singlehanded – Laser Radial
And, as the Continental Country Qualifier, in these three additional events:
Men’s 2-person Skiff – 49er
Women’s 2-person Skiff – 49erfx
Mixed 2-person Multi-hull – Nacra 17
The Laser and Laser Radial events are Regional Games Qualifiers, while the 49er, 49erfx and Nacra 17 are Continental Qualifiers. Two NOCs will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games in each of these 5 events. All places are awarded subject to the details of the Tokyo 2020 Qualification System.
Following this decision World Sailing will now seek final approval from the IOC and publish an updated Qualification System to reflect these changes here.
For the first time 5 of the 10 Sailing Events at the Olympic Games will have Country Qualification at the Pan Am Games.
