Long Beach, CA - The SCYA Midwinter regatta last weekend at Long Beach Yacht Club saw PHRF A big boats Chayah (l) and Emirage II (r) battling with the local snow-capped mountains in the background. Photo by Rick Roberts.   Light winds characterized the Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta held last weekend on Tampa Bay in St Petersburg, FL. In the huge 49-boat Melges 24 Fleet, Terry Hutchinson (above) scored a three point win over Brian Porter. Photos by Joy Dunigan.  The 18ft Skiffs this week are in Sydney, Australia having their unofficial world championship - aka the JJ Giltinan International Championship. Here is a photo from Frank Quealey, with a complete gallery coming next week.    First there was the 49er, which has been a Olympic class since 2000. Then came its little brother, the 29er, which had many of the same features but was more suitable for youth sailors. Now comes the 29erXX, a super-sized version of little bro, using the same hull but adds an extended stern bracket and a bigger rig for more sail area. Pitched as a women's event for the 2012 Olympics, the 29erXX bridges the gap between the 29er and the 49er.
